EDUC 6165: Schitt's Creek Coversation

 Schitt's Creek

In the sitcom "Schitt's Creek," a wealthy couple -- video store magnate Johnny and his soap opera star wife Moira -- suddenly find themselves completely broke. With only one remaining asset, a small town called Schitt's Creek, which the Roses bought years earlier as a joke, this once-wealthy couple must give up life as they know it. With their two spoiled children in tow and their pampered lives behind them, the Rose family is forced to face their newfound poverty head-on and come together as a family to survive.

The conversation between Alexis (blonde hair) and Stevie (black hair) was at the front desk of the hotel. Without the sounds, I thought that they both were having an argument, and Alexis was complaining about something to Stevie. Stevie's facial expressions seemed to be negative because her eyebrows are brought together, usually indicating displeasure, sadness or worry, or less often confusion or concentration.  I feel like Stevie (black hair) dose not care about what Alexis says based on her facial expression which is frown and poker face. One the other hand, Alexis's gestures are pretty open and very exciting.

After turning the sounds on, I found that both characters were talking about how to cath guys' attentions by texting them. My first thought was totally different from the conversation between Alexiss and Stevie. I believe that if I get to know both characters and the show my assumption for their conversation without the sound would be different because I get used to their nonverbal languages.

I realized that I had learned a lot about how communication works in everyday life. The first thing I learned is that our body language can communicate a lot of information. It can communicate to others whether we are happy, sad, or impatient. It can also alert others that we do not understand what they are trying to communicate to us however, some people may have different nonverbal language to use based on their culture or personalities. We must ensure to learn the way they express their body languages to understand their message in a better way.

  1. I have always heard of this show and never gave it a chance because I thought it was about something a lot scarier! How interesting the differences in conclusion you came to with the sound off and the sound on. I agree that this exercise gave a better perspective on communication in every day life. Just because someone is not smiling when they are engaged in conversation, does not always mean they are angry butt it could look like that from a distance. I think it is important in those situations to give those the benefit of the doubt because we wont actually know what is going on until asked or brought into the conversation.

  2. Hello Sawin,

I never heard of this show, but I always found it interesting to see how very wealthy people cope with the idea of having to transition back to a basic lifestyle. Because they have lived at such a high standard their ability to adapt back to a normal lifestyle is often quite difficult. This assignment opened my eyes to understanding the importance of both verbal and nonverbal cues and how nonverbal cues can be taken out of context sometimes.
